Overview
About this Course
This is a cultural and educational program aimed at enhancing students’ Arabic language abilities. It focuses on developing skills in eloquence, public speaking, grammar, and understanding of the Qur’an.
Learning Outcomes:Â
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Review the parts of speech in Arabic.
- Learn about sentence types in the Arabic language.
- Study different literary forms, including poetry and prose.
- Practice writing various forms such as essays and short stories.
- Explore poetic schools and their characteristics.
- Apply linguistic analysis to selected texts from the Qur’an, Prophetic hadiths, and both classical and modern stories.
- Choose at least one literary form and attempt to produce a written piece in that genre.
Assessment Methods:
Students will be evaluated through:
- An oral interview during the first session to determine the appropriate track (for native or non-native Arabic speakers).
- A final exam at the end of the program.
- Worksheets and in-class activities throughout the course.

Week 3: Introduction to Literary Arts

Week 4: Arabic Poetry
- Definition and characteristics of poetry
- The poetic verse and rhyme
- Examples from classical and modern poetry
- Activity: Basic appreciation and analysis
Week 5: Prose and Its Types
- Definition of prose
- Types: essay, story, speech
- Comparison between prose and poetry
Week 6: The Art of the Essay
- Definition and types (descriptive, narrative, argumentative)
- Structure: introduction, body, conclusion

Ustadh Aghyad, a native Arabic literature graduate, has had a lifelong passion for the Arabic language, becoming a renowned poet in Syria. Since moving to Canada, he has taught Arabic at various levels for 15 years and holds an Ijazah in i’rab of the Qur'an.
